Why color is the first thing customers notice
Research from the Pantone Color Institute shows color increases brand recognition by up to 80 percent. Consumers form a subconscious judgment about a product within 90 seconds, and up to 90 percent of that assessment is based on color alone. Getting your palette right from day one sets the tone for every piece of marketing, every screenshot, every social post, and every paid ad you will ever run.
Color psychology by industry
Blues convey trust, reliability, and professionalism, which is why they dominate fintech, healthcare, and enterprise SaaS. Greens signal growth, balance, and sustainability, common in finance, productivity, and wellness. Purples communicate creativity and premium quality. Reds and oranges create urgency and energy, popular for conversion-driven products and food. Black and white convey luxury, simplicity, and editorial authority. Pick colors that match the emotional response you want from your buyer.
WCAG accessibility is not optional
WCAG AA compliance is a legal requirement in the European Union, the United States under the ADA, and many other jurisdictions. AA requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Our brand color palette generator checks every combination automatically and only outputs palettes that pass. Designing for accessibility is not a constraint, it is a quality bar that makes your product usable by everyone, including the 8 percent of men with red-green color blindness.
What a complete brand palette includes
A production-ready brand palette has at minimum: a primary color (your brand signature), a secondary accent (used sparingly for emphasis), a neutral family with three to five greys (background, surface, border, text-muted, text), and semantic colors (success green, warning amber, error red, info blue). Skipping any of these creates design debt that compounds with every new feature you ship. Generate the full palette upfront so your design system is consistent from day one.
What makes a good brand color palette
A good palette is three things at once: distinctive, accessible, and flexible. Distinctive means your primary color does not look like every other product in your category. Accessible means every text-on-background pair clears WCAG AA contrast. Flexible means the neutrals support both light and dark modes without losing identity. Beyond technical checks, a good palette also has emotional alignment. The colors should match the feeling your buyer should have when they land on your page. A productivity tool feels different from a fitness app, and the palette is the first signal of that difference.
Code-friendly outputs: hex, JSON, Tailwind
Every palette exports as plain hex codes, a JSON file (colors.json), and a ready-to-use Tailwind config (tailwind-theme.ts). Drop the Tailwind file into your project and the new color names work immediately across your codebase. The JSON file is easy to consume from any build pipeline or to convert into CSS variables. Shadcn theme blocks and design-token-system formats (Style Dictionary, Figma Tokens) are on our roadmap, not in the kit yet. We are building this because we use these formats every day.
Pricing transparency: free preview, $8.99 for the full kit
Previewing a generated palette is free. No signup. No credit card. No daily quota. If you want to download the palette as part of a complete brand kit (with logo, fonts, favicon, OG image, tagline) the kit is a $8.99 USD one-time purchase. No subscription. No upsell. The price is the price. Most competitors either hide pricing behind contact forms or push annual plans starting at nearly $100 per year. We chose pay-per-use because builders ship a finite number of products, not an infinite stream of brand kits.
Why we built this for indie hackers and vibe-coders
This is not a generic color picker for marketers. It is built for builders. The output assumes you will paste it into a Tailwind config or a CSS file later today. Every palette comes with the format you actually need, not a screenshot you have to retype. The audience is indie hackers shipping micro-SaaS, vibe-coders prototyping ideas on weekends, and solo developers who care about WCAG but do not have time to hand-tune contrast ratios. The founder building this tool ships side projects too, which is why the output is engineered for paste-and-go.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many colors should a brand have?
A primary, a secondary, a neutral family of three to five greys, and four semantic colors (success, warning, error, info). That is enough to design every UI state without ever feeling restricted.
What is a WCAG-compliant color palette?
A palette where every text-on-background combination has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Our generator checks this automatically and only outputs compliant combinations.
Can I use these colors commercially?
Yes. Generated colors are just hex values, which are not copyrightable. Use them in any commercial project without restriction.
Should my brand color match my industry?
Not necessarily. Many breakout brands deliberately pick colors that contrast with their industry norm. Stripe used purple in a sea of blue fintech logos. Pick the color that fits your personality and stand out on purpose.
What file formats can I download?
Hex codes, a JSON file (colors.json), and a ready-to-use Tailwind config (tailwind-theme.ts). Inside the full $8.99 brand kit, palettes also ship inside the brand-guide.json. Shadcn theme blocks are on the roadmap, not in the kit yet.
What is free vs paid here?
Generating and previewing palettes is fully free. Downloading the palette as part of a complete brand kit (with logo, fonts, favicon, OG image, tagline) is $8.99 USD one-time per kit. No subscription.
Can I regenerate the palette after buying the kit?
Yes. Inside any paid kit, you can reshuffle the palette without redoing the whole kit. You can also swap individual colors while keeping the rest of the system intact.
Do you support team accounts or shared palettes?
Brand Generator currently focuses on solo founders. Team accounts are not yet available. Each kit (and its palette) can be shared via download, so collaborators can import the same JSON file or Tailwind config.
What is your refund policy?
See our terms for refund details. Generally, one-time purchases are non-refundable except for technical failures. If your palette or kit fails to generate or download, contact support and we will resolve it.
